Daniel James, the flashy Winger for Manchester United is having one of the best seasons of his short career. He is fast, intelligent and has a unique match sense to follow the tactical plan to perfection. The Welsh International is not only good going forward but is an able defender too. This edition of Tactical Masterclass looks into the young welsh’s role in the club.
Dan James’s Early Days
Dan James was bought from Swansea city where, as a full-time first-team player he played only 1 season. The player was not only quick to impress Graham Porter but also pulled in interest from other clubs. In his first season at Swansea, James had quite impressive stats which defines his style of play too.
In his first season at Swansea Daniel James had :
- 4 goals
- 7 assists
- 3.2 Crosses per game
- 2.6 shots per game
- 1.2 clearances each game
James was deployed as a Left Winger for most of his period at the club. He is also, though comfortable playing in all the 4 attacking positions.
Dan had quite an accomplished season. With few match-winning performances earned him a Manchester United call.
Daniel’s Style of play
The Welsh International has quite an exciting and eye-catching football style. He usually uses his quick speed and flashy dribbles to win 1v1 situations. He usually presses the backline and look to exploit the space by either crossing in or striking the ball for a goal. The Welsh International can be best explained as an Inverted Winger. He tends to push Forward and look for through balls or shot to score a goal. He can be best compared to Heung Min Son at Tottenham Hotspurs.
Dan is also very good at tracking back to complete his defensive duties. This also makes him a very viable option in 3-5-2 formation. In the game against Man City, when playing for Swansea, he played as a Full Back and made it really difficult for Kyle Walker to cross and cut inside. This helps them completing blocking the Right side.
Daniel James under Ole
Daniel James under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played majorly in two different positions tactically. The positions are discussed below :
- Left Winger: Daniel James has played Left Winger in time of need. He was used by Ole as a reinforcement to rest key players like Rashford. Daniel James has been quite successful in getting those crosses and through balls. Under Ole, the major work he has done from the Left Wing is to cut Inside and look for the far post to score. He has won 103 duels this season in the Pl.
- Right Winger: The Welsh International has been deployed majorly in this position. From Right-Wing the players’ major job was to track back and pull in the crosses. The ability to track back has helped Wan Bissaka to go much higher up the pitch. He has also been used to put in those crosses. He has made 88 crosses in the PL this season. This has also resulted in him being the player with the most assists at the club. He has also made 4 successful through balls in the center of the pitch which is high given the fact that its not his role.
Some statistics which needs to be mentioned are :
- 35 Games
- 4 goals
- 6 assists
- 23. 74 passes per game
- 0 errors leading to a goal.
The player is quite an exciting prospect and it will be interesting to see how Ole uses him next season. The news of Jadon Sancho and Grealish floating around will, of course, make it difficult and increase competition in his place.
