Strength In Depth
The current Manchester United squad has very little depth in terms of quality. The young outfit is heavily relying on two of their midfielders in Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba. As soon as the duo was substituted Saints started dominating the game. This is a major issue as a single injury next season might ruin it all. The ongoing transfer rumors regarding Jack Grealish and Donny Van De Beek is a promising sign. This only indicates that United are looking to bring in quality midfielders next season too.
While talks for a new center-back are gathering pace, Victor Lindelof was impressive at the back for Manchester United. The Swede was constantly trying to pick out a pass to the forwards with his long balls. Many of which carried promise up the field. Victor had a good game overall and proved that maybe center back isn’t a priority at the moment. However, he needs to continue improving on his aerial game. It is an area of his game that has drawn so much criticism recently.
Brogba Are Humans
The midfield duo of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes had an off game after setting the league on fire since the restart. Both players struggled during the course of the game and looked far less impressive by their standards. Although Fernandes managed an assist to Martial, the Portuguese looked a shadow of himself during the game and also gave away the ball quite a few times. He couldn’t pick out the killer passes to the strikers, something he is very good at. Pogba’s game started in frustration after giving away the ball cheaply which led to the opening goal of the game. Although he put up a half-decent performance after the incident, he never looked like making things happen from the midfield.
In Rashford and Tony we should believe !
The game saw both Manchester United forwards Marcus Rashford and Martial find the back of the net. Rashford scored his first goal from open play since the restart while Martial continued his rich vein of form. Although Rashford missed a sitter that could’ve possibly won the game for United, the England international has been good with his all-round play and produced some impressive forward passes during the game. The pair once again showed they are good enough to be the main men for a title-winning side in the future.
De Gea Slump Continues ?
Although both goals conceded were not from De Gea’s individual errors, there are scopes for debates with his positioning for both the goals. The Spaniard couldn’t anticipate the high press from the Southampton forwards and come off the line to put pressure on the attackers after Pogba gave away the ball in the build-up. Instead, he stayed on his line and ended up conceding without being able to give a decent try to save. He was also put under question for the second Southampton goal where he again stayed on his line without attempting to punch the ball away. With Dean Henderson putting pressure on his number one spot, it could be a decisive twelve months ahead for the Spanish goalkeeper which would ultimately decide his future with Manchester United.
