Manchester United Youth Watchout : Joe Hugill

Joe Hugill

Joe Hugill is a 17 year old English Striker who was born on 19th October 2003 in Durham. He currently plays in the Manchester United youth setup at U-18 as well as the U-23 level. He has not made it in the Senior team yet, but he is an exciting talent.

Club Career

Joe Hugill spent his entire youth career at Sunderland. He was one of the best performers in a team whose form was woeful. He consistently scored goals at every age group. Manchester United fended off competition from Arsenal and Tottenham to sign him for £300,000 from Sunderland. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, coach Michael Carrick and head of youth development Nicky Butt watched Hugill during Sunderland’s fixture against United last year.

He made an immediate impression after signing for The Red Devils. He scored a brace on his debut in U-18 Premier Division north in 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers. Hugill has scored 6 goals and has 1 assist in his 4 appearances for the U-18 team. He was promoted to U-23 and he has scored 4 goals in 9 appearances.

Hugill has quickly adapted to life in Manchester and is steadily developing into great player. He was the part of the Manchester United academy intake in 20/21. Under Nicky Butt there has been a significant influx of a talented pool of players and is a good sign considering the long term future of the club.

Joe Hugill is a tall, lanky Centre Forward who can play as a lone striker or in a two man partnership. He is 6 ft 2 inches tall. Despite being only 17,he is able to compete in U-23s due to his physical presence. He is utilized primarily as Lone striker in Neil Wood’s system.

Even though he is tall, he has a great burst of pace and is a lethal finisher with his left foot. His hold up play is excellent, thus he is able to create chances for the pacy wingers who play with him(Elanga, Pellistri). Hugill is a modern day Centre Forward who has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.

Man Utd are currently well stocked up front with Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood. Hugill surely has a lot to learn and will cherish the oppurtunity to learn from one of the best in the business.
