Mason Greenwood, the 18-year-old English striker has been having a great 19/20 season. With the lack of squad depth, Mason was called up frequently with the belief of getting a goal or two. And he has been brilliant in that. Several times this season, he came from the bench and scored that decisive goal for the team. Today on Tactical Masterclass, we cover the young striker, Mason Greenwood.
Mason Greenwood joined the Manchester United academy at the age of six. He started developing at the academy with great development speed. Mason was part of United’s youth teams and played an integral role in all these teams.
After several successful years in the youth teams, in 2017-18 season, Mason was called up to represent United’s U-18 team. He went on to score 16 goals and 4 assits for the under 18s in the 2017/18 season in just 17 games. Later that season, he won the Player of the Tournament in the ICGT Trophy at Netherlands.
Greenwood began the 18/19 season again on a high note and ruled the under 18s. He was the second highest scorer in the league having only played 13 games and scoring 15 goals – a goal every 75 minutes. He also had 5 assits during those games, making his total goal plus assists tally to 20 in just 13 games i.e. 1.5 goal involvement per game. He was then promoted to the under 23s where he had 8 goals and 3 assists in 11 appearances in the PL2 and UEFA Youth League.
During the 18/19 pre-season tour, Mason was also included for training along with the first team. And made couple of appearances in the friendlies as well.
On October 2018, Greenwood signed his first professional contract with the club. In the same season, he made his competitive debut for Manchester United when he came on at the 87th minute against PSG in the UEFA Champions League. With that appearance, Greenwood became the 2nd youngest to represent United in a European competition. And youngest ever in a UEFA Champions League. He has 3.2 shots per 90 mins and 1.1 shots from outside the box per 90 mins. Mostly operating from the right side in the competition he also has created various chances having 1.1 key-passes per 90 and 1.9 dribbles per 90. Mason has scored 5 goals in the competition having 1 goal per 129 minutes, which is lower than our highest goalscorer Marcus Rashford who has a goal every 134 minutes.
He was praised for his performances by Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville, who said Greenwood looked like the “real deal” after rescuing a point for Manchester United. Till now, Greenwood has scored 12 goals for Manchester United across all competitions this season.
“I remember talking to Nicky Butt about eight months ago and he said Mason Greenwood was the best young player he’s ever seen at Manchester United. That is some statement considering all the players they’ve produced, like the Class of ’92. “Redknapp on Sky Sports
Style of Play
The striker is fast and energetic. He started playing as a Attacking midfielder, and later evolved into a striker. Mason can dribble past defenders and make any defence look feeble even in this young age. He is comfortable with both feet and can shoot with left as well as right. Due to similar playing styles, he is frequently compared with United legend Robin Van Persie.
“He can play all of the front-three positions, or across the front four, as he can play number 10, number seven, number 11 and number nine. He’s a natural footballer with his left foot, coming in, but he’s got two feet and can play anywhere along the front. He’s just a natural. When he takes a penalty with his right, then takes a penalty with his left, free-kicks with his left, free-kicks with his right. He is almost what you’d call 50-50, maybe 51-49 left-footed.”Ole on Mason in July 2019
Greenwood’s Playing Position
Greenwood has played in two different positions this season: Right Wing and Center Forward. He along with Daniel James have rotated among themselves in the right wing position throughout the season. Mason has also played as a centre forward when coming on as a sub. He has also started cup games as a centre forward and has done well.
Mason has not yet managed to win any silverware with the club after making his debut for the club last season.
Some of his individual achievements are:
- Premier League 2 : Player of the Month – April 2019
- Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year : 2018-19.
Mason Greenwood is surely a great prospect for the future. He already shining bright in the highest level of English football and will only increase in the future. Hoping to seeing more and more goals and assists from the youngster in the future.
