Manchester United had an emphatic win over Aston Villa last night and continued their unbeaten run to 17 games. With this win, United close in the gap from the top 4 and also leave a daylight from 6th placed Wolves. As a result, United are only 1 point behind 4th placed Leicester City and 2 points away from 3rd placed Chelsea.
Let us look at how each player performed yesterday night and their rating for the match :
David de Gea : 6/10
David literally didn’t have much to do throughout the match. Villa had 10 shots yesterday, off which only 1 was on target. And that shot was an easy save for de Gea. Also, there weren’t any shots that actually tested de Gea and literally had nothing to do.
Aaron Wan Bissaka : 6/10
Wan Bissaka had a pretty average match. He looked occupied through the right wing and formed a great partnership with Greenwood. Wan Bissaka had also been awarded a yellow card for a tackle lateron in the second half. He also had an opportunity to score his first Premier League goal before he headed a Rashford cross just wide of the right post.
Victor Lindelof : 7/10
Lindelof also had an average game and he didn’t had to make any crucial clearances or interceptions yesterday night. He along with Maguire were solid at the back and denied Villa’s attack pretty easily.
Harry Maguire : 7/10
Maguire had an average match with not much clearances or interceptions had to be done. He was solid at the back whenever Aston Villa attacked and made sure it was dealth with properly.
Luke Shaw : 8/10
Shaw had a great match. He was very much involved in attack along the left flank. He linked up with Rashford very well and also had several shots on target as well. Shaw made frequent runs into the box and Rashford always looked to find him. He gradually got better and better at it as the game progressed. Disappointed not to see him on the scorecard.
Nemanja Matic : 6/10
Matic was pretty solid in the defensive midfield role yesterday night as well. Though he lost possession several times in the midfield which he didn’t used to in recent times. Scott McTominay replaced him lateron in the second half.
Paul Pogba : 9/10
Paul Pogba returned to his usual best yesterday night. A brilliant performance by the Frenchman and in return he also managed to score a goal as well. Pogba last scored a goal for Manchester United back in April 2019. In addition, the goal showed the connection Bruno and Pogba have and the duo can really do wonders together.
Bruno Fernandes : 9/10
Apparently, Bruno Fernandes can’t do anything wrong while playing as a Red Devil. Another day and another match winning performance by Bruno. The Portuguese midfielder scored and assisted a goal each yesterday. And is the only player in Premier League history to have 13 goal involvements in his first 10 Premier League games.
Marcus Rashford : 8/10
Everyone has been very critical about Marcus Rashford not being able to score a goal yet from open play after restart. But infact, Rashford’s value has actually increased as he is not only looking to score goals, he is also looking to spread the play and work with the team. Rashford’s off the ball movement and passing have severely increased post restart though the goals are not yet coming. He alone created ton of chances yesterday but sadly they weren’t finished for a goal.
Mason Greenwood : 9/10
There will be no debate if someone says Mason Greenwood is the most talented teenage footballer in the world. The kid has taken the world by storm after scoring his 16 goal of the season across all competitions. His strike to score the second goal for United, made people wonder how he generates such power behind the ball. This kid is pure talent.
Anthony Martial : 8/10
Martial might not have his name on the scorecard, but his on field performance was just spellbound. He was the complete opposite of himself looking at him from the start of the season. His work rate has increased severely and his movements off the ball is just great. Martial actually set up Mason’s goal with a brilliant footwork to get past several Villa players. Odion Ighalo lateron replaced him and the Frenchman looked very frustrated on this.
Daniel James : 7/10
Daniel James has somewhat become a revelation coming off the bench. With his immense pace and attacking mentality, he creates major problems to a drained and exhausted defence. It was in display when United met Bournemouth as well, and the same was seen yesterday night too. Just after coming on, he had a clear chance at goal that he missed. He looks like the ideal player to become a super sub for United in the future.
Brandon Williams : 6/10
Williams came on to replace Wan Bissaka on the right back. Ole looks to be trying him out on the right flank as we have seen him being deployed at that position earlier as well. Though he plays at left back. Shaw’s performance in recent times has reduced Brandon’s game time, but Ole wants the youngster to get more game time and maybe so he is using him on the right back position.
Fred : 5/10
Fred came in as a substitute for Nemanja Matic in the second half. He didn’t have much to do and was good for the time he was out there.
Odion Ighalo : 6/10
After coming on as a replacement for Martial up front, Ighalo looked pretty solid and created some chances. He used his strength and kept the ball several times to lay it off to other players.
Scott McTominay : 7/10
The midfielder looked well in touch for the short time he was on the ground. With the rise in form of Matic, Scott had lost his position in the starting XI. But, yesterday Scott looked really good, giving trouble for Ole to choose his team for the next match.
This win for United against Aston Villa was more of a display of their attacking prowess rather than defence. A great performance up front and United’s attack consisting of Bruno, Pogba, Rashford, Martial and Greenwood looks really threatening. Hope the team manages to outperform all the remaining teams in their remaining fixtures as well.
