Manchester United faced Burnley away from home in their 17th fixture of the Premier League. Solksjaer named an attacking side with Cavani leading the line after coming back from suspension. Defensively, Bailly was cleared fit to play the match and hence, started alongside captain Maguire.
David De Gea 6/10
De Gea returned in goal for United replacing Deano. He hardly had any thing to do all evening. A couple of good distributions from the Spaniard towards Bruno and Pogba.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6/10
Bissaka also returned into the starting line up in what was a very crucial match for United. Got caught out at the back post towards the first quarter of first half. Bounced back well and was solid defensively ever since.
Eric Bailly 7/10
Probably one of the most surprising inclusions in the squad having been out due to injury the previous match. However, he started having been cleared by the medical staff ahead of Lindelof who also has been reported injured. Had a good evening out against Burnley, gave De Gea little to nothing to work on. Put his body on the line and blocked a couple of strong hits from Burnley.
Harry Maguire 7.5/10
Maguire captained the away side having been rested the previous FA Cup fixture against Watford. However, he did came on for the second half in place of injured Bailly. Maguire was brilliant tonight. Had a goal controversially disallowed in the first half. Probably one of the contenders for man of match. He had a 100% tackle success ratio and had 6 ball recovering tonight. A captain’s performance!
Luke Shaw 6/10
Shaw started from the left back position. He had a good outing tonight as well. Solid defensively and created a couple of decent opportunities going forward.
Nemanja Matic 7/10
Matic replaced Mctominay in the defensive midfield position for the Premier League fixture here tonight. Matic was as solid as a rock tonight. Commanded the midfield with his experience and good distribution of passes. Ageing like fine wine!
Paul Pogba 8/10
Pogba played alongside Matic and Bruno in the midfield 3 as a box to box midfielder. He struggled to get his foot on the game during the first half but then went on to score a difficult volleyed goal. This makes him the man of the match tonight. He contributed to 25 final third passes, 8 ball recoveries and 100% tackle win ratio.
Bruno Fernandes 6.5/10
United’s star man Bruno Fernandes started in the attacking midfield role. A decent performance from the Portuguese tonight. Involved in several attacking opportunities tonight.
Marcus Rashford 6/10
Rashy started from the right wing position. He struggled to get ahead his 2nd gear tonight. Slowed the game down on several occasions but contributed to the key ball played tonight towards Pogba for the winner.
Edinson Cavani 6/10
“El Matador” returned back from suspension and lead United’s attacking front. He misqued a ball played from Martial early on the second half in what was a decent goal scoring opportunity. His work rate was phenomenal and should have had an assist late on for his beautiful ball played towards Martial.
Anthony Martial 6.5/10
Martial made the start from LW position replacing Dan James from the FA Cup tie against Watford. Martial had a good game compared to Rashy. He had a beautiful shot saved by Pope in the first half and was also a constant threat to Burnley’s defense. However, he should have done better late on where he missed a clean goal scoring opportunity.
Mason Greenwood 6/10
He came on for Rashford in the last 10 minutes of the match. Hardly made any impact.
Scott Mctominay 6/10
Came on to help and give defensive support towards the final 5 minutes of the match.
Axel Tuanzebe 6/10
Replaced Martial in the dying seconds of the match. Came on as time wasting and clear out any possible balls into the box.
With this win, Manchester United head straight to the top of the table for only the 2nd time since SAF left. United are now 3 points clear of 2nd placed Liverpool with equal number of games played. The players and Ole deserve every bit of appreciation for turning this season around. With no UCL to play, United could be looking for a good finish to the season and are also strong favourites for the title this season.
