Manchester United faced Crystal Palace in our opening fixture of the season. The game was shambolic for United and it clearly displayed out weaknesses. The overall lack of support from the Board was clearly visible. At this level, Top 4 looks unrealistic for this United squad. Further, Rivals have signed quality opposition and along with the wrath of the Champions League, it looks like a difficult season.
David De Gea 4/10
David De Gea made a great save off an Ayew shot from the first half but his distribution was horrible in this game and De Gea’s going to have to work on that if he wants to remain our number 1 keeper. He did get unfortunate with the penalty being retaken but overall not the best game.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah 5/10
Fosu Mensah was solid throughout the game. He was always looking for a pass forward. Timothy wasn’t bad defensively but he wasn’t great either. He doesn’t have the quality to be a starter for United but he is a good backup.
Victor Lindelof 2/10
Victor Lindelof was part of the reason for Townsend’s goal. He did a good job quite a few times at preventing Zaha from counter attacking but he looked shaky throughout the game. Lindelof was at fault for all three goals with him giving away the penalty and also Lindelof being bodied off the ball before both of the other goals.
Harry Maguire 3/10
Harry Maguire was very quiet throughout the game. He had several misplaced passes that nearly cost us a few goals. He was slow on the ball and was caught out on the counter attack several times.
Luke Shaw 4/10
Luke Shaw was the defender responsible for marking Townsend on the opening goal. A very big error from his side.He had some good linkup play with Marcus but he was caught out of position on several occasions.
Scott Mctominay 3/10
With Matic being out Scott was meant to fill the role in behind Pogba and Bruno. He lost the ball several times and the Palace forwards knew to push him when he had the ball. The only positives from his game were a few last ditch tackles.
Paul Pogba 1/10
Pogba was awful. He couldn’t do the simple things on the pitch and he was lucky to not be subbed at half time. Paul looked off the pace and he probably shouldn’t have come back so soon after contracting Covid.
Bruno Fernandes 4/10
Bruno was average, he was looking to create but lacked support from his teammates. It still wasn’t his best game as he had to track back a lot during the game.
Daniel James 2/10
Daniel James started this game to the surprise of many fans and he massively disappointed. He attempted many crosses and they were all horrible. James didn’t provide anything for us in attack.
Marcus Rashford 4/10
Marcus had some good linkup with Shaw and Van De Beek when he came on. He didn’t create any clear cut chances though and at times he looked like he just didn’t know what to do.
Anthony Martial 3/10
Martial was very isolated throughout the game. Anthony Martial didn’t really do much with the ball when he got it. He didn’t get any chances to get many shots off and the ones he did get off were not very good..
Donny van de beek 6/10
Donny came on and gave us a little hope. He netted himself a goal on his debut but it wasn’t enough. He had some good linkup play and he looked promising. The new signing proved his quality to the fans. It will be interesting how Ole uses Donny.
Mason Greenwood 4/10
Greenwood never really got involved in the game. He looked better than Daniel James but he didn’t really get many opportunities because of Palace’s defense sitting so deep.
Odion Ighalo: N/A
Ighalo only had a short stint on the pitch and he was a good opton to hold the ball up near the box but every time we played it into him he just lost control of the ball.
As a whole we looked tired and disinterested. Our players clearly weren’t up for it. Donny Van De Beek looked good, so that should insert some life into our squad. Hopefully we can bounce back for our next game. As a United fan, I was absolutely distressed at the score line and immediate changes are required at the club to bring some improvement.
