Manchester United faced Manchester City in the semi final of the Carabao Cup. Both these teams played out a dull 0-0 draw in the Premier League a month ago. However, United’s semi final tremor continues and so far United have been dumped out for the 4th time from a competitive semi final. Man City are through to the finals after beating United 2-0 and will face Jose’s Spurs for the final. Here’s the player ratings for United vs City.
Dean Henderson 6/10
Henderson replaced De Gea in goal for the semi final tie. He was helpless in all the two goals which Man City scored.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5/10
Wan-Bissaka had little to no part in going forward for United. Could have headed the ball out a bit further for the second goal of Man City but again not much you could blame him for.
Victor Lindelof 5/10
Lindelof returned back into the starting XI after missing out on the last 4 matches due to injury. He struggled against City’s attack and time after time United fans have been calling out for Lindelof not to be partnered with Maguire. Lindelof could have been better in terms of his positioning.
Harry Maguire 4/10
Maguire captained United playing as the left center half. Struggled partnering with Lindelof, showed the importance of a pacy center back for United. He made another Set Piece Blunder today.
Luke Shaw 6/10
Shaw had no impact on the game whatsoever. An average performance, had to run back and forth to cover the left midfield and the left back position as well.
Scott Mctominay 4/10
Mctominay played in a double pivot alongside Fred. He started the game well and a good performance in the first half. A little clumsy passes here and there but otherwise a solid performance. Unlucky to be substituted at the 75th minute for Greenwood since United desperately needed an equaliser.
Fred had a below par performance. He was unable to keep City’s midfield under control and had a couple of loose passes intercepted.
Paul Pogba 6/10
Pogba too had a below-par performance. Not his night for sure, not many creative passes or runs into City’s defense. Cancelo was comfortable covering him up from the left-hand side of United’s attack. Pogba Though was the only midfielder who looked in the groove to create something up front.
Bruno Fernandes 5/10
Let’s be honest, Bruno was poor tonight. Did not completely get on the game. He was hardly seen in the first half except for the shot which was brilliantly saved by City’s keeper. Second half took more initiative and tried to open up City’s defence but was unsuccessful.
Marcus Rashford 6/10
Rashford had a good start to the game. Looked sharp in the opening moments of the match. But struggled to open up City’s defence. Offside couple of times and had a shot blocked brilliantly by Ruben Dias in the first half.
Anthony Martial 4/10
Martial lead the line for United. He was poor, poor movement from Martial. No service at all for him but his movement was poor as well. A night to forget.
Mason Greenwood 6/10
He came on in the 75th minute in place of Mctominay and went straight in the right wing position. Had a couple of good movements but not enough time for him to make any significant impact.
Donny Van de Beek 6/10
Came on for the last 5 minutes. Probably not the sort of cameo we wanted to see of him. Would have preferred not to bring him on instead.
A poor performance from United, not the one we hoped after a good run of form from United. We are knocked out yet again from a semi final. City outplayed us with their possession based football. On the positive side, we’re still in a title race and we must learn from this game and move forward. The Burnley game is crucial and a win/draw will take us top of the table ahead of Liverpool.
What do you think about our performance tonight and was it right to drop in form Bailly in place of Lindelof? Do you agree with our ratings? What changes would you make if any? Do let us know your thoughts.
