Manchester United faced Wolverhampton Wanderers in their 15th fixture of the Premier League season. United manager, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer named an attacking side with Cavani leading the attack on his second Premier League start. Lindelof did not travel with the squad due to injury. The match ended 1-0 for United placing them 2nd in the table behind Liverpool by 2 points. Both the teams put a good performance defensively but a lucky deflection sealed the 3 points for the Reds.
David De Gea 7/10
De Gea put on a good performance for the Reds. With 5 saves to his name, he was a crucial part in United’s resolute backline. Saving a couple of headed opportunities from Wolves defender Saiss to keep the scores level and no doubt De Gea is getting back his past form.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6/10
Wan-Bissaka had a quiet game, nothing much to do except keeping his lines clear. He struggled to make a major impact offensively and hardly crossed the ball into the box and often involved in sideways passing.
Eric Bailly 8/10
Eric Bailly put in great performance tonight in the absence of Lindelof. Often had to cover for Maguire and ran to track Adama Traore and Neto’s run on both sides of the defense. He alone put in 7 ball recoveries and 2 interceptions in the first half itself and kept the whole of Wolves attack at bay in the second half. This sort of performance should surely boost Lindelof and Maguire’s game to compete for the centre back positions.
Harry Maguire 7/10
Maguire captained United into a narrow 1-0 victory. Typical Maguire performance, won several air balls and put in a good tackle to restrict Neto from a goal scoring opportunity late in the first half however Bailly often had to cover for his slow pace otherwise was decent and had a good pass completion rate.
Alex Telles 6/10
Telles had little impact on the game. He got replaced by Luke Shaw after the first half, put in some decent balls into the box but not quite good enough for a goal scoring opportunity. Defensively was decent and helped Maguire on a couple of occasions.
Nemanja Matic 7/10
Matic had a tremendous second half. His interceptions, ball recoveries, aerial duels won and passing in between the lines were particular good. Played the connecting link between defense and offense and put a tireless shift right to the end of the match. He had 96% pass accuracy, 18 final third passes, 10 ball recoveries and 3 interceptions won. Ageing like fine wine!
Paul Pogba 6/10
Pogba had a par performance. Not upto his name, a couple of good moves here and there. He slowed down the pace of the game couple of times when on the ball. Took a good shot towards the end of the match which Patricio comfortably saved. Other than that had no other significant chance in front of the goal.
Bruno Fernandes 7/10
To be honest it wasn’t Bruno’s night. Wolves kept him quiet and marked him well. But still gets an assist and contributes to the team. He is now involved in 15 goals (10 goals, 5 assists) in his last 15 Premier League appearances. The Bruno magic keeps on going!
Mason Greenwood 6/10
Greenwood created 2 chances and 1 big chance in the first half but wasn’t enough to last the full 90 mins. Martial replaced him to add more flair in the match. An average performance from the youngster and had couple of minutes with the veteran striker Cavani.
Edinson Cavani 6/10
Cavani had a quiet evening at Old Trafford as well. Tracked back and pressed hard. His work rate was good. Didn’t receive as many balls into his feet as he would have liked. Had a goal disallowed due to offside.
Marcus Rashford 7/10
Rashford was relatively poor in the match. His passes were a bit too heavy and lost possession numerous times in key positions. Yet he came up with the decisive goal with the help of a deflection to take home the 3 points.
Luke Shaw 7/10
Shaw came on after half time replacing Telles in the left back position. He had a positive impact going forward. Put in a couple of good balls into the box, linked up well with Bruno and Martial going forward and dealt with any possible danger while defending comfortably. This further puts competition on Telles for the left back role.
Anthony Martial 6/10
Martial came on in the 65th minute of the game in place of Greenwood. His hold up play was good, linked up well with Shaw and Pogba and co. He had an opportunity from the edge of the box from a Pogba pass which he shoot above the cross bar. Not many clear cut opportunities but did bits to give United all three points.
Scott Mctominay 6/10
He came on in place of Bruno for the last couple of seconds to give defensive cover for the one goal lead scored in 90+3 minutes by Rashford. Hardly touched the ball.
This win takes us to the 2nd of the table trailing Liverpool by 2 points. We have overcame a poor start to the season with a series of victories and now are unbeaten in 9 Premier League matches. This win gives us a good boost of confidence since we have been poor playing at home and should look to carry on from this victory. Bailly put in a good performance and it will be interesting to see Ole’s selection once Lindelof is fit again.
