Manchester United are now unbeaten in 10 games in the Premier League and are mounting a serious title challenge. The current squad looks good but some positions need reinforcements. These reinforcements should help Man Utd sustain their title challenge and capitalise on the good run of form.
The positions which require reinforcements in my opinion are: Centre Back, Central Defensive Midfielder, Right Back and Right Winger.
Manchester United have been planning to buy a CB since the last summer window. They have a good lineup of CBs which include Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly, Tuanzebe with Mengi rising through the ranks. Maguire and Lindelof are the first choice centre back pairing but they are not the ideal pairing. Individually both Maguire and Lindelof are good players but as a pair both of them lack the speed and agility to play a high defensive line thus holding the entire team back. With Eric Bailly starting in the last few games, we’ve seen the difference a quick CB makes. But both Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have a dubious injury record and Mengi is young and inexperienced.
Thus signing a quick CB should be the top priority in the January transfer window. Man Utd are linked with a host of CBs including David Alaba, Dayot Upamecano, David Carmo, Facundo Medina, Pau Torres, Ozan Kabak and Nikola Milenkovic. Alaba and Upamecano probably won’t be available in January. Man Utd have apparently contacted Kabak’s agent and are monitoring Medina and Torres. A Centre Back should be a top priority in the January transfer window.
Central Defensive Midfielder:
Manchester United are well stacked in the middle of the pitch, but they lack an out and out defensive midfielder. Nemanja Matic best suits this position and has been playing well but he isn’t getting any younger. So it is important to replace him. The player must be quick, defensively solid, must have the vision and should be a tidy passer of the ball. As good as Fred and McTominay are, they don’t have all the necessary attributes of a CDM. Moises Caicedo and Dennis Zakaria are the 2 players who have been linked. James Garner can fulfil this role too and his progress on loan at Watford should be monitored.
Having a good CDM takes some pressure off the defense. It gives the team the ability to start attacks deep from their own half. Man Utd should be shore up this position as early as possible.
Manchester United have plans to add a right back in their ranks. The main reason is to add some competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The signing of Alex Telles has seen a significant rise in the level of performances of Luke Shaw. Similarly, by adding a RB, Manchester United look forward to do the same. Wan-Bissaka is great defensively but going forward he needs to make significant improvements in his game. So Manchester United are linked with attacking fullbacks in the form of Kieran Trippier and Max Aarons. Kieran Trippier has recently been banned by the FA so apparently Manchester United have shifted their focus on 20 year old Norwich right back Max Aarons.
Aarons is defensively solid and more importantly very good going forward. Competition for places pushes the players to give their best. The arrival of Alex Telles has pushed Shaw to do better and he is relishing the competiton. But Manchester United have not made an approach for Aarons as of now. Also Manchester United can try Brandon Williams and Ethan Laird as both of them are immensely talented and will surely be hungry to break through in the first team.

Manchester United have been chasing a right winger for quite a while. Mason Greenwood and lately Marcus Rashford have been good playing from the right. But they aren’t creative enough. They tend to drift inwards and are rarely seen around the touchline in crossing positions. To fix this issue Manchester United were after Jadon Sancho for the entirety of the summer transfer window. But Borussia Dortmund’s valuation of Sancho put them off. They went on to sign Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo, two young and immensely talented wingers. Manchester United did show firm interest in Ousmane Dembele for a loan, but the deal failed to materialize.
Amad Diallo will join the team in January and Pellistri is already adapting well in England. So United looking to sign a player in this position in January seems unlikely, unless Jadon Sancho is available, which is highly unlikely.
These are the improvements which need to be made in the squad by Manchester United. Man Utd find themselves in a title race despite a relatively poor and shaky start to the season. The onus is on the board now to make improvements to the current squad which will strengthen the title charge and help take Manchester United back to the very top. It is very important to build on this momentum and capitalise on it!
