Manchester United continued their unbeaten run with an emphatic 3-0 win over relagation fighting Aston Villa. A match where United managed to break several records, be it team based or individual records. It was an all-round performance by the reds as they crushed Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Let us look at some major talking points from the match :
Greenwood shines yet again
Our 18-year-old wonderkid bags the MOM award once again after a great display. He scored United’s second goal late into the stoppage time of the first half. The youngster has become such a sensation across the world that even if he fails to convert a shot on target to goal, people are amazed. That speaks volumes of the calibre and skill the young lad has. The pundits looked surprised after his first shot after dribbling through the defence didn’t end up at the back of the net. Thanks to a brilliant save by Aston Villa keeper Pepe Reina.
But the right winger didn’t take any chances with his second shot and made sure the shot had all the power needed. At halftime, everyone was amazed at how an 18-year-old could generate such power behind the ball.
Mason’s strike just before halftime doubled our lead thus helping Ole ease with his team talk at halftime. He was very agile throughout the match and looked a huge bundel of energy through the right wing. Daniel James replaced Greenwood later on into the second half.
The midfield duo score
Both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba got their names on the score card. With the former scoring a goal for United after 14 months. This was Pogba’s first of the season. And Bruno’s 7th in only 10 appearances for the club. Bruno also provided the assist for Pogba’s goal.
Fernandes started off the goal scoring for United after a fairly controversial penalty was awarded to United. Bruno himself was fouled inside the penalty box, and the on-field referee was quick to give it a foul. But on replay, it didn’t look like Bruno was fouled. After earning a penalty himself, Bruno stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it home to give United the first goal.
Pogba scored the third and last goal for United. It looked like the perfect execution of a training ground set piece drill. United were awarded a corner and Fernandes stepped up to take it. Instead of tossing it up into the box, Bruno passed it to a waiting Pogba outside the box. Pogba with all his experience guided the ball to the right corner. Reina couldn’t even make an effort to save it and watched the ball get planted at the back of the net.
Dull day for Grealish
United managed to keep Aston Villa’s talisman Jack Grealish quite throughout the match. Unlike the influence he had during the two teams met at Old Trafford during the first half of the season. Though Grealish was Aston Villa’s best player on the field, his solo efforts weren’t enough for Villa to get across the line. He did create several chances during the initial 10-15 minutes of the game when Villa were in control. He also had Villa’s first shot as well. But lateron as United dominated the game, Grealish’s influence decreased.
In addition, the midfielder was said to play with an injury which he sustained during their match with Liverpool. Yet Grealish played the full 90 mins for Villa.
Several Records Broken
With this convincing win, United managed to break several individual as well as team records. Some of those records are :
- Bruno Fernandes has the highest G+A return in the first 10 matches in Premier League history.
- Manchester United are the first club in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches with a goal difference of 3 or more.
- Manchester United have had 20 different goalscorers this season, the most in a single season since the 2012/13 season (also 20).
- No player has scored more Premier League goals from outside the box than Mason Greenwood this season (4).
- Bruno Fernandes is the first Manchester United player to be involved in 13 goals in his first ten Premier League games.
- Manchester United have had 13 penalties in the Premier League this season. No team has ever had more in a single season.
- De Gea made his 399th appearance for Manchester United this evening, passing Peter Schmeichel’s record for the club.
- No Man Utd player has registered more Premier League assists this season than Bruno Fernandes (6).
- Only Bruno Fernandes (6) has scored more Premier League goals since the restart than Mason Greenwood (4).
Manchester United continue their unbeaten run to 17. And are just a point away from 4th placed Leicester City and 2 points away from 3rd placed Chelsea. In addition, United have a daylight between them and sixth placed Wolves by 6 points. Looking at the remaining fixtures for United, they should be able to finish in the top 4 with the last league match against Leicester City being crucial.
