Post-Match Analysis: United secure Champions League football

Man United celebrate

Manchester United victorious 3-2

Manchester United won by a 2-0 margin against Leicester City to secure the 3rd place for themselves in the Premier League. This means that United secure Champions League football for the 2020/2021 season. After a one year break from the Champions League, United are back in the elite European competition with a bang. Fans around the world watched the first half anxiously until Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot. United seem to be a much improved side but yet there are lots of tweaks required. Manchester United need to be better to be able to compete as title contenders in all competitions next season. The Manchester United board trusted Ole’s capabilities despite him having minimum experience and the faith has repaid itself.

Talking Points

Sloppy start

United as a team didn’t have a particularly amazing game in the first half. Leicester set up a back 5 with hope to play on the counter. The first 45 minutes rather seemed similar to previous years when Manchester United failed to score early in the game. Leicester City had many excellent chances that they failed to convert. One particular counter attack involving Iheanacho shone to be a good chance with David De Gea allowing a second shot from Jamie Vardy. De Gea had been quite fair in the game but still showed signs of error.

Need for quality squad players

Manchester United needed to give much required rest to the regular starting 11 who have been carrying the club over the past few weeks. The club urgently need quality players in the midfield and some form of reinforcement in the defence. United must also look for a right winger who can play dangerous crosses. Over the next few weeks, the Jadon Sancho situation will clear itself and United must be ready to grab the opportunity. Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba supported the United attack but then it looks like they were over worked. Matic was absolutely solid and Ole must make sure Scott Mctominay is rotated as well.

Bruno’s Penalty

Manchester United gained momentum only after Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot in the 71st minute. Martial dribbled in the box while both Evans and Morgan lunged for the ball resulting in a penalty. Bruno Fernandes did his trademark jump and sent the keeper flying toward’s the wrong way. Schmeichel attempted to distract Bruno by jumping on either directions but Bruno focused on scoring the penalty.

Lingard’s injury time goal

Kasper Schmeichel couldn’t control the ball and misplaced his touch, Lingard came soaring in to receive the ball. He moved towards the centre to obtain a full view of the goal, then he shot the ball into the open post. This may prove to be a confidence booster for Lingard after shambolic performances across the season. United just needed a reason to celebrate at the very ending of the game and Lingard just gave them what they wanted.

Conclusion

Manchester United eventually grinded the result from Leicester City and emerged victorious. This game may have not been the best performance but United look very happy with the result. United need to address the issues before they begin with the 2020/2021 season. Most star players such as Rashford, Bruno and Pogba looked overworked and they will now receive much needed rest. United must seriously fix their defensive issues as well as lack of depth in the upcoming transfer window. The Red Devils play LASK on August 5th to play the second leg of their Round of 16 fixture.
